The bandwidth required to download this little rant is too valuable to waste on the contents. I would say get a job and get a life but the writer appears to have problems with both. This item, I will not call it a book, reads like a protracted social networking blog or wall post. Congratulations to the writer, I will not use the word author, for getting the piece published. I now have confidence that a book about any inane boring fact, like being a poor grad student, can find a publisher.Product details

I read this book because the author mailed me a copy to look over to consider her in a reading series I run. The book is in dire need of editing and I have to agree with much of the negative feedback already posted concerning autobiographies ....If its not by someone famous, then it should be about someone interesting or have a great life lesson attached. The book is void of all of that.
At the end of the book, I thought there would be some stunning revelation and there was not. Further to compound the situation, the author, local to where I run my series which she solicited to read at as a feature, "does not have the time" to come to open readings for myself and my staff to judge her reading ability/other work....Hey, maybe the author has a stunning story and is an awesome story teller/entertainer...but I won't know because she is too busy to come out to support the series and other writers that are trying to `get out there', but she has, apparently, time to come out if she's a headliner.
The scuttlebutt is that this author has or will be publishing more titles, under a pseudonym, for some weird reason which was explained in correspondence, but not understood....In short, boring, poorly written, in need of editing and author has no aspiration to "pay her dues" (which is what her 29 jobs already did for her?).
To me there are two reasons to write an autobiography
You're famous and people want to know the ins & outs of your life.
Your life's journey is interesting and has some kind of meaning or lesson to it.
The author of 29 Jobs is decidedly not famous but the book description makes it sound like there's some kind of enlightenment, some meaning, at the end. I expected that, by the conclusion, the author would have some epiphany, show some humility, or at the very least transcend the bitter, self-absorbed, condescending brattishness with which she began the book.
In chapter after chapter Ms. Topper subjects the reader to her bile and contempt toward everyone around her. Paragraph after paragraph is filled with disdainful references to this or that "idiot", "loser", "flunkie", "a-hole". Even trips to Cannes and Milan are described with the same negative filter - same idiots speaking a different language. The only people she doesn't lambaste are her parents and film industry notables (e.g. Q. Tarantino), I'm assuming because she's hesitant to alienate those who might still be of use to her.
Aside from the unrelenting spite and indelicate phraseology ("...the whole little company of 8 people plus the retarded guy with a hump...", "I was a French tutor...to a retarded Chinese boy....") the book is plagued with stilted writing, incorrect word usage, and a penchant for Valley-girl speak
"Nothing ever hardly got prosecuted..."
"Meanwhile, I totally hadn't found a job."
"I ate no where cool...."
"Naturally, the absurdity of this claim further undermind..."
There's also a debilitating lack of narrative flow. The author simply spends chapter after chapter ranting about her jobs and the idiots around her. Despite the catchy title and promises of some kind of lesson or enlightenment, the author's constant self-aggrandizement, sanctimony, and derisive attitude made it impossible to give more than two stars.
I got this book for free, but now I am wondering if I should actually be paid for wasting my time. Luckily, I only got to chapter 3 before I decided that I would prefer a root canal to reading any further. I don't even understand the point of this book unless it is to prove how rich and extremely lucky this stuck up brat is to basically never have to work for anything in life. Since I didn't finish the book, I can only conclude based on the first few chapters that the writer's parents happened to know a publisher...I mean that is how she describes she has gotten anywhere in life. This is exactly what is wrong with her entitled, privileged generation.
There were passages that I laughed out loud! And I could relate on so many levels. Jenn Topper's story made me reflect on my own job experiences. I can't wait for her next book!
I enjoyed this book and never got bored. Great for the price! I do, however, have to say that I found the author a little pompous regarding her talents(though she certainly does have some) and the inadequecies of others. Not just some others...ALL others.
